The Traders are not a formalized "profession" nor are they taught in any Hall, Hold or Weyr. There is no formal 'head' or hierarchy of the Traders, rather, Traders are organized in groups that follow particular circuits of the Southern Continent. Since much of the Southern Continent is difficult for travel over land, travel is mostly along the roads that do exist or along the rivers, using boats or barges. The Traders bring goods to trade and sell at Gathers and help supply Hold, Hall, Weyr and cothold alike. On SouCon, the Traders are under the direct auspice of the Craft Wizard. To become Trader please read through NEWS TRADER JOINING.
The Traders are not a formalized "profession" nor are they taught in any Hall, Hold or Weyr. There is no formal 'head' or hierarchy of the Traders, rather, Traders are organized in loose family groups that do a circuit of the Continent. As much of the Southern Continent is difficult for land travel, travel is mostly along the roads that do exist or along the rivers, by boat or barge. The Traders live on the road, in wagons, and are based out of a particular Hold during a Pass -- their traditional routes are dotted by cave systems for safety. On the Southern Continent the Trader families have taken the names of the Ancient provinces both as a tribute, but also because they were made up of many of the original trader families.

Occasionally Harpers spend their Journeying time with a Trader family as this is an excellent way for them to get around. Traders also sometimes have a rare talent called a "nose" that travels with them. A nose is someone who's olfactory senses are finely developed to the point where they can determine the components of an aromatic solution, or to compile one. Generally they travel from place to place, gathering flowers and herbs to make into perfumes and soothing herbals. These are blended into a base of rendered fat or pure alcohol, which are bartered from the Vintners. |
