Rubicon River was founded at the end of the Ninth Pass near a natural deep cove. Holders, from Paradise River SeaHold, found the cove when they were blown off course during a storm. Here the Healer on board the ship discovered a number of unusual herbs, and shortly afterward the Hold was built. A central hall, kitchen and infirmary are housed in a single building. Many single buildings surround the Hold and spread outwards, the tradition being for the family to help build the Cothold of each newly married couple. Rubicon grows a number of nut trees, as well as herbs, some of which have proven to be valuable in the treatment of upset stomachs.

Lord Holder Erdin: Erdin became Lord Holder of Rubicon Hold at the age of thirty-two after the death of his father from nothing worse than old age. Although Erdin was the fourth son, he was his father's first choice, mostly because he already had five sons, and possibly another on the way. Erdin's tenure as Lord Holder was fairly unremarkable until Nemar's disease swept the planet. The Lord Holder put in several measures to try and save lives, including signal fires and burning the dead. However, the disease still took its toll: six children and Erdin's beloved wife, weakened from giving birth, died, leaving but three children, and one girl.

For one who has gone through so much tragedy, Erdin has remained a fair and open Lord Holder. Many misunderstood those decisions made during Nemar's disease, and Erdin gambled heavily upon his prior reputation. However, his calculated risks have paid off and Rubicon River Hold has regained the trust of Weyr and neighbouring holds, providing them with a tasty selection of nuts and valuable medicinal herbs through tithes and barter. Over the Turns, he has groomed his eldest son to take on more responsibilities, implementing new grafting practices suggested by the younger man and as a result has seen a much higher yield in nut harvests.
