Ierne Weyr was founded during turn 100 of the Ninth Interval, formed from the overflow of Xanadu Weyr by Gold Syralith and her rider Alystia. It is located on Ierne Island, on the far southwest of the Southern Continent. It is responsible for the coverage of Great Bay Hold, Seminole Hold and Uppsala Hold, as well as the Baker Hall.

On Turn 100 of the Ninth Interval, it was decided to form a new Weyr to cover the Ierne area. Due to a plea from the then Xanadu Weyrwoman, the new Weyr would be formed from the massive overflow at Xanadu. The next gold to rise, excluding the current senior, would become the new Senior Weyrwoman of Ierne Weyr and the bronze that caught her would be Weyrleader.

To most of Ierne's delight, the next gold to rise was Syralith, Alystia's gold. Now Alystia was great at leading, able to organize things to infinite details, but she was a temperamental witch when things didn't go her way which, back at Xanadu Weyr, was quite often. The bronze that snared the wily Syralith was Zoth, lifemate to the equally temperamental T'ral.

The new Weyrleading pair moved into an extinct volcano on Ierne Island accompanied by two full wings and a full staff for the lower caverns. Immediate work went into the hatching cavern for Syralith would soon clutch. A cavern was formed using a natural crater with the geothermal heat from the rocks around to heat the sands. It was finished just in time for Syralith to waddle over to the hot sand and lay a grand total of 38 eggs including a much valued gold egg.

Candidates were gathered from every corner of Pern though they had to sleep rough like most of the Weyr until their barracks was built. Candidate chores consisted almost completely of building the new Weyr which mean a lot of rough chipping from stone and a lot of large muscled, fit candidates by the end.

The process wasn't helped by the differing ideas of Alystia and T'ral hence why even now two contrasting styles are clearly shown in the overall structure of the Weyr. Most of the Weyr was relieved when Syralith's clutch cracked open and Alystia could once again leave the Weyr and bug other people. The most watched hatchling was, of course, the new gold. She was a pale gold with hide like an opal but despite her frail appearance, she went straight for a nervous, weaver Apprentice Syrrina who became Weyrling to Gold Zahlyth.

After turns of hard work, the Weyr finally reached a level that satisfied Alystia, which is quite a task when you consider how high Alystia's standards were. T'ral had died in a fall halfway through the building and it was A'zien and his Bronze Yiolth that heralded in the party to celebrate the full opening of the new Weyr. It was a truly huge party and the whole of Pern was said to have a hangover the next day.

This isn't to say improvements stopped, it became a tradition for each candidate group to hollow out the Weyrs that might eventually be their own. Alystia eventually passed the gauntlet of leadership onto Syrrina who, truth be know, was a far better leader than Alystia and it was Syrrina who added most of the ornamentation to the Weyr including a vast quantities of tapestries in and about the Weyr. In fact, Syrrina's leadership was one of the most profitable for the WeaverCraft.

Turns passed as turns will and the Weyrleadership changed hands many times and each Weyrleading pair added their own distinctive touch to the Weyr though the tradition of candidates hollowing out the Weyr still remaining. During the next Pass, the Senior Weyrwoman was injured badly in fall and though her Dragon and her survived, the gold would never rise again. Hence the leadership would pass to the next gold to rise and the bronze that caught her. It was Ishera's Gold Braneth that rose and, to not really anyone's surprise, her lover C'kel's Bronze Panarth that caught.

During the Tenth Interval, Ierne Weyr prospered on its little island off of the Southern Continent. The riders and hunters explored the jungles of the island, driving what dangerous wildlife, namely felines, further away from the small holds that were being settled. The Healers studied the variety of plants found on the island, testing what different properties they had, studies flourishing when Thread passed. The riders of Ierne Weyr helped out with these studies, providing transportation for people and supplies, as well as being guard for any felines that dared attack. In helping with these botanical studies, not many riders went to help at the excavation at the Landing Plateau.

Those riders still at Ierne were happy they didn't leave when news of the disease reached them. The Healers on the island were called back to help find the cure, but by then, most Ierne riders refused to leave the Weyr for fear of infection. The Healers were taken, yet those riders were infected without realizing it, but due to paranoia, were quarantined on their return. However, due to the disease being airborne, and the fact that no airborne disease could be isolated for long and that it also started infecting the water supplies, the disease did flourish.

The disease became rampant in the Weyr, infecting everyone that it could. The Weyr quarantined itself from the rest of Pern, though this proved a mistake. The disease was allowed to fester and cause a bit more damage than it did to other Weyrs. By the end, Ierne Weyr was able to fill two fighting wings, with a bit extra, but their one surviving gold was among the older Dragons, and many felt she wouldn't rise to mate again. With the suggestion of the Lessa-like jump, Ierne's leadership was insistent that a fertile gold was to come as well as more riders, due to their drop in numbers than most other Weyrs. The riders that were the 'overflow' volunteered to be among those that would *between* back to the Tenth Pass.
