Located near Monaco Bay, in the volcanic range of which Two-Faced Mountain is a part, the second Southern Continent Weyr was founded by T'gellan and Durras at the end of the Ninth Pass as Eastern Weyr. Renamed in the Tenth Pass to Monaco Weyr, the Weyr is responsible for the coverage of four Holds: Cove Hold, Monaco Bay Hold, Cardiff Hold, and Jordan Hold, and one Crafthall: Harper. The Weyr was founded with mostly a younger generation of riders and, as such, was organized in a radically different way from the existing Northern Weyr's of the time. It took its inspiration from the other Southern Continent Weyr, with Riders living in small cotholds and their Dragons in open, sandy wallows. There is a central WeyrHall but the spacious kitchens are mostly outdoors. The Hatching Grounds, however, are level and the audience galleries form a ring beyond the ring of candidates. The Shipfish Wing was the exception and the tightly knit emphasis on wing camaraderie resulted in the construction of its own dormitory during the Tenth Pass. Since the Weyr is composed of an unusually large number of structures it is rumored quite loudly that being headwoman of this Weyr is no easy task: the staff includes a particularly large number of assistants. The surrounding jungle also adds to the numerous complications of maintaining this Weyr, resulting in the need for a rather large Groundcrew. During the Ninth Pass an unfortunate combination of Lord Holder and Weyrleaders led to a change of Cove Hold's loyalty to the far further Honshu Weyr, which had compatible Weyrleaders originating from Cove at the time. It took some 150 Turns before the arrangement altered, and some say it was only due to Honshu being unable to fly Threadfall over the Hold due to the inopportune earthquake that rendered it uninhabitable. During the Tenth Interval Monaco Weyr went from growing exponentially to once again tapering down to a more manageable number. During the fiftieth Turn an enormous tidal wave swamped the Weyr. The Smiths speculated that this was due to some island out in the Western Sea, but none are sure. The Weyr received adequate notice, with a couple of riders having the sense to *between* back in time to ten hours early when they were on Sweeps at Jordan Hold and therefore at only moderate risk, if any. It was evacuated swiftly, mostly due to the Turnly evacuations in hurricane season - despite this, approximately twenty lives from the Weyr were lost to the raging waters. Holders and Crafters also suffered losses but thankfully not as many if there'd been no warning. In Turn 132 the excavations at Landing began and Monaco was flooded with visitors: CraftMasters, Weyrleaders and the very newest of Apprentices, each designated important duties. Monaco Bay Hold swarmed with ships traveling from North to South and then returning to the North once more. Monaco was charged with making sure that everything that flew in or out was recorded. As such, an occasional rider became more prosperous -- a nice bottle of wine or a rare perfume exchanging hands for not noticing certain items leaving. When the disease starting spreading through the community at Landing, Monaco suffered heavily. The riders fell sick, their Dragons *betweening* almost hourly, and residents and Crafters followed quickly behind. Every member of Shipfish Wing followed its Wingleader, the dormitory standing quiet and empty, and rumors of a curse followed. Although the Senior Weyrwoman, Hanlina, locked herself away and avoided catching Nemar's, all but one Junior who helped tend the wounded soon died. Roughly three Wings survived, including all but one Wingleader. Indeed, the WeyrlingMaster, his assistant and the last clutch of Weyrlings had also passed *between*. Trying to bring the tattered lives back together Hanlina struggled, her Weyrleader working with the Wings trying to train the remaining riders into fighting fitness, while she struggled with the living arrangements. The strain gradually sent Hanlina insane. Slowly but surely Hanlina's ramblings became less coherent and her words tended toward gibberish. One month later, she and her lifemate disappeared *between* on a routine journey, one that her Weyrmate and Weyrleader had tried to stop. Juletta, the remaining Weyrwoman, her gold Jalith as yet unflown, valiantly took the reigns of a Weyr breaking with its losses. All around, in the various Holds and Crafts beholden to Monaco, the populace strived to save what was left of their lands, to keep it there for those in the future, even though they worked longer hours and more days before a rest. They were determined to bring it back to its previous splendor however much of a struggle it would be. Monaco's Weyrleader was a strong advocate and perhaps a desperate one too, for the Weyrs of the early Tenth Interval to jump forward. When asked for volunteers to make the leap he sent Kathena, an enterprising young Wingrider, and rider of Brown Ionth. She originally hailed from Southern Weyr and knew the layout -- legend had it that she was the descendant of one of Southern's Wingleaders from that time. Almost a day after Kathena disappeared *between* on her trip to the past, Jalith decided to rise. Caught by Zorith, K'raj's lifemate, the previous Weyrleader retired gracefully, grateful to give the burden of leadership to someone with more energy. The jump forward provided Monaco with a number of new riders. A number of riders from Southern Barrier, having heard of the famous Shipfish Wing and the delights of warm Monaco as opposed to cold Southern Barrier, followed Kathena back into the future. They swiftly made the rumors of curses in the dormitory null and void, loud singing and late night parties signifying that life of some kind had returned. A month or so later, and a new gold graced Monaco's sands, impressing to Corella. To this day, Monaco attracts the sun loving, the Dragon loving and the ever famous 'domestically-inclined' that seem to appreciate the luxury of a proper cothold to themselves. The Monacoans are, by nature, consummate swimmers and appreciate Harpers more for the entertainment they provide than the learning. While the location of the Weyr is subject to Turnly evacuations for hurricanes, those that remain know this inconvenience is more than made up for by the ocean and sand-oriented life they have found to lead there. Monaco's holds keep it well provisioned with runners, fungi, gin and rum.

Senior Weyrwoman Juletta: |
Juletta was born in the Northern Continent, to a Ruathan runner-breeding cotholder. She is the only child of her father (or at least, the only one she's aware of), her mother having been lost at her birth. Luckily for the girl, her father never held it against her. Indeed, father and daughter were, and still are, quite close. Juletta grew up learning runners at her father's knee, and in fact as a child was determined to become a jockey for several Turns. Apprenticing to the BeastCraft under her father, it seemed that her future was assured. But, around the age of sixteen, Juletta began to grow restless, wanting to see more of the world. Knowing that in just a few Turns free exploration would be impossible, and knowing his daughter's stubborn determination, Sket gave her his blessing, and hoped that she'd return to him before long. Juletta went from one end of the continent to the other, doing odd jobs here and there to support herself, and even took a trip south across the ocean. She was working as a stablehand at Southern Hold when she was Searched by Monaco Weyr. A couple of sevendays later, she Impressed Jalith. The fourth goldrider in a Wing of four, Juletta figured she'd be a very Junior Weyrwoman for a long time. All that changed with the plague. One by one, her superiors succumbed, and when Hanlina was lost *between* only the young and almost untried Juletta remained. She rose to the occasion, though, working tirelessly to lead her Weyr through the tragedy. She was helped in this by K'raj, and the pair fell slowly in love. It was no surprise when his Zorith flew Jalith on her maiden mating flight to become Weyrleader. Between these two indomitable personalities, Monaco Weyr has rallied well despite being seriously short-handed of personnel. Juletta is a very self-sufficient young woman, and she's still bound by a bit of wanderlust. The difference now, of course, is that she can pop to another part of the planet whenever she likes in her free time. It's gives her a feeling of freedom that she revels in, neatly counterbalancing the draining duties of her position. She is in perfect accord with her Weyrmate K'raj, and the pair balances out perfectly -- her fire, his quiet talent. |

K'raj:
|
Riding a dragon was the furthest thing from Kiraj's mind when he was growing up. In fact, he would have been appalled at the notion. His parents Delraj and Brella, a pair of Vintners at Monaco Bay Hold, had a grudge against dragonriders dating back to Delraj's young, beautiful, and very marriageable sister turning up pregnant by a bluerider. Kiraj was raised to perceive riders as predatory tyrants, even to the point of being enlisted in his father's subtle sabotages against the Weyr. It was during one of those little missions, when at sixteen Kiraj was accompanying a tithe train to Monaco Weyr, that profound changes began to take place: upon his arrival at the Weyr, Kiraj was promptly Searched. A rather intelligent lad, he quickly figured out the advantages of up-close-and-personal observations of the enemy. What he wasn't prepared for was discovering that dragonriders are not monsters. On the contrary, they seemed to be regular people. Even the dragons were, if not outgoing and friendly, certainly not cruel beasts. Kiraj began to doubt everything his parents had taught him. The house of straw collapsed completely when he was standing on the Sands, and rosy bronze Zorith claimed him forever. From that moment forward, K'raj's loyalties were firmly entrenched in the Weyr. The pair passed through Weyrlinghood with flying colors, soon becoming known as an extremely dedicated fighting pair. K'raj rose through the ranks quickly, even taking a stint as Weyrlingmaster for a few turns. He was a Wingleader when the plague struck, and when the new senior queen rose to mate, it was Zorith who won her (to nobody's surprise), making K'raj Monaco's Weyrleader. K'raj is rather young for his position, and knows it. He constantly agonizes over his decisions, never realizing that they are excellent, his instincts and natural talents serving him well indeed. He has retained some of the conservative nature with which he was raised; even after a decade in the Weyr, a tease about the opposite sex will make his ears go pink in a unique blush. K'raj cares deeply for his people, and would not hesitate to sacrifice himself for them if it became necessary. Zorith is less constrained, and in fact his tongue can be quite sharp at times. He tolerates no nonsense when it comes to maintaining the health and well-being of Monaco Weyr and its dragons. |

Weyrwoman Corella:
|
Corella was born at the United Crafthall, the oldest child of future Woodcraftmaster Cenita. She was a beautiful, sweet child who charmed all who met her, and was a prime candidate for being spoiled rotten. Cenita made sure that was not going to happen, though, and the girl grew up with a firm sense of duty and honor planted in her heart. Feminine to a fault, she had no interest in the Woodcraft that her mother held so dear. Instead, she was drawn to the Healing Crafts, earning a purple and white apprentice's knot. As she thrived in her studies, she began to focus, and by the time she was ready to walk the tables, knew that most of all she wanted to specialize in Obstetrics. She never got the chance. Less than a sevenday before she was due to sit the exams, Corella was Searched, and Impressed gold Adorith. This was a surprise, since a gold was not expected from Juletta's Jalith. Corella serves as Juletta's Wingsecond, working tirelessly with her Weyrleaders to advance Monaco to its former glory after the devastating plague. Corella was, and is, a sweet, intelligent young woman, more empathetic than even most goldriders. Gentle and reluctant to put up a strong front, she tends to compromise in a dispute to keep the peace, even when she shouldn't. Juletta is trying to train her out of that tendency. |

Weyrsecond
M'wan:
|
M'wan was born at Monaco Weyr, son to a Weyrmated brown/green pair. The young Megwan was always a sober, rather introverted lad, more interested in quietly staring out over the ocean rather than playing with the other Weyrbrats. His parents, who were both rather fun-loving folks, were puzzled by his demeanor, but decided it did no harm as long as he stayed out of trouble. That was never a problem; Megwan's pursuits tended to be of the solitary type, deep in the jungles around the Weyr. As he grew older, he just as quietly chose to forego a Craft, instead seeking out Monaco's handymen to ply with questions. He started out handing them tools, and gradually moved up to more active assistant. By the time he was Searched at twenty-one, he could fix just about anything in the Weyr. Even after Impressing, his favorite hobby is tinkering, and his approach can always be detected by the clinking of whatever bits and materials he has carrying around that day. M'wan is still quiet and a bit of a loner, his lifemate Orriseth providing all the companionship he requires. He is, however, more outgoing than he was as a child, and continues to become more so as he discharges his responsibilities, and especially since thee realities of the plague taught him the value of time. He is utterly loyal to K'raj, and his thoughtful advice to that man has made the Weyrleader treasure M'wan's assistance. |
