Southern Barrier Weyr is located in the Eastern Barrier mountain range. It has the least hospitable climate of all the Southern Continent Weyrs. The mountains usually are snow bound though the valleys are warm, requiring the Southern Barrier riders to fight thread Turn round. The Weyr is responsible for the coverage of three Holds: Paradise River Hold, Paradise River SeaHold, South Bend Hold. Southern Barrier
Weyr was founded by Marlena, Rider of Gold Maylith and C'mic, Rider
of Bronze Lironth during the early Turns of the Tenth Pass. The population
has always remained small since Southern Barrier Weyr's harsh climate
makes it one of the least desirable Weyrs. It doesn't attract many Residents
other than those rotated through the Weyr for survival training or assigned
there for certain infractions. For those willing to endure the bitter
weather, there ice fishing, skiing, and canine sledding to offer diversion.
Miners, hearing rumors of gold deposits and trappers, seeking fur-bearing
animals for their luxurious pelts, pursue those sources of income. With the advent of the Disease, Southern Barrier Weyr's isolation served to protect it from contagion, but this only lasted until the stockpiles of supplies gave out. With the reluctant order from the Weyrleader, a supply train was dispatched -- along with the Disease. Despite precautions, first one and then another storeroom worker sickened and died. With the spread of the disease to the rest of the Weyr came rider deaths, along with the subsequent loss of their Dragons. The deaths of all the Queens in Southern Barrier Weyr and their Riders occurred on the same day, an event that devastated the morale of that Weyr, leaving the Weyrleader in deep shock. To the grief and horror of those fit enough to witness it, the wild-eyed leader, cradling the body of the deceased Weyrwoman in his arms, leapt aboard his Dragon, took to the skies and winked out into the finality of *between*. He left behind a shocked and demoralized Weyr, now missing over half of its population, most of them older folk, to the ravages of the disease. It fell to the only remaining bronzerider, young R'bet, Zamaeth's Rider, now Acting Weyrleader, to gather the shattered remains of the Weyr and press on. He petitioned the Weyrs for a loan of Junior Queens but the Weyrs, having few left to send and thinking that the snowy wastes would need less guarding, turned him down. One queen was sent from Xanadu Weyr, an unflown gold by the name of Cyrith and Hass, her Rider. Together R'bet and Hass worked to rebuild the Weyr in the wake of the disease, but it was hard going. All of Pern's Weyrs were stretched to their limits and none had extra Riders to offer. L'gan, brown Polath's Rider, was appointed Weyrsecond and the rest of the remaining brownriders stepped up into wingleader positions. Junior Queen duties were divided up amongst those most able to handle them as Hass had her hands full learning the duties of Weyrwoman. Happily for her, the Headwoman's foster daughter Lira had survived the Disease and was an invaluable aid to her. Fatigue and strain began to set in, however as the Pass ground on. Thus it was with astonishment, wonder and relief that they greeted the news that numbers of Riders appeared from the past to aid them. The weary Riders welcomed them and thus began a new beginning for Southern Barrier Weyr.

| Senior Weyrwoman Hass: | Hass grew up at Island River Hold, the second eldest of a large family. She was responsible, caring and capable and heavily leaned upon by her busy parents to care for her younger siblings. At age 15, two Turns before the Disease surfaced and much to the chagrin of her family, she was Searched by a Rider from Xanadu Weyr. Gold Cyrith found Hass on the sands, joining with her to become one of several Junior gold pairs at Xanadu Weyr. They grew together, learning the responsibilities of Threadfighting and supporting the Senior Weyrwoman. After the disease wiped out all of the Queens from nearby Southern Barrier Weyr, she was transferred to act as Weyrwoman and help rebuild that shattered Weyr. Hass is young but steady, well able to handle the tasks before her. Cyrith adds a lighter dimension to her personality with her wit, charm and mischievousness. | |

| Weyrleader R'bet: | R'bet was born Roybet and grew up in a tiny guest cothold that catered to hunters and trappers who came to the Southern Barrier Ranges to hunt. His life was so busy helping run the cot with his parents that he never had time to visit the Weyr, although he often daydreamed of doing so. Impulsive and headstrong, Roybet hiked to the Weyr and was in time to witness the most recent hatching. Leaning too far over the railing of the galleries, however, he slipped and landed on his stomach-right in front of a Bronze hatchling, who asked him if he was ok. R'bet became one with Zamaeth that day, much to the amusement and consternation of the Weyr. To his sorrow, the disease took every Bronze and Gold Rider of Southern Barrier Weyr in the first few days of its rampage. The suicide of the Weyrleader shook him to his core but he could not see giving up. Being the only remaining bronzerider left, he stepped in to take the reins of leadership and rebuild the Weyr. When the lovely Hass, along with her Gold Cyrith, transferred from Xanadu Weyr R'bet was heartened and smitten! | |

| Junior Weyrwoman Lisina: | Growing up as a small cotholders' daughter from near Benden Hold, a twelve-turn old Lisina was surprised to be searched so far away from home. Even more surprised were Marlena and C'mic by the gold egg and hatchling that greeted the pre-teen lass. From the moment she announced, "Yes, Tamiath! I came a long way to find you too!", the pair have been learning and growing together. Lisina is solid and steady and, guided by the other weyrwomen at Southern Barrier has grown up into a lovely young woman. Her lifemate on the other hand is a terrible clutz. Their first few clutches were near disasters, and despite the intervention of Marlena, the then Senior Weyrwoman, several of the eggs did not survive to term. In the last few Turns of the last pass, Tamiath finally grew into her tail and wings, and produced three gold eggs for the Weyr. Lisina volunteered to transfer forward at the end of the Tenth Interval to give guidance to Hass, though she firmly states she is happy as a Junior, she gives as much of her advice, passed down from Marlena, to Hass as she can, the two having become close friends. | |

| Weyrsecond L'gan: | L'gan, once called Logan, was born at Monaco Bay Hold. He was the only son of Tergan, a widowed fisherman there. Logan was trained from an early age to the fishercraft and was content to ride the waves, feel the wind in his hair and smell the tang of the sea in his nostrils. That is, until the visit from Daryla, a greenrider from Southern Barrier Weyr when Logan was 17 years old. During her short stay, the two fell in love. Daryla talked Logan into returning to the Weyr with her, promising to find him work there. Upon their arrival, in a totally unexpected turn of events, one of the blue dragons decided he would be a good Candidate for the clutch of eggs warming on the Hatching Ground. Logan accepted and became L'gan when Brown Polath chose him after rejecting every other Candidate there. L'gan grew and learned, serving in time as Wingsecond and later, Wingleader. After the disease decimated Southern Barrier Weyr, L'gan was chosen to the position of Weyrsecond. | |
