Communication

There are several fundamental commands that are vital to functioning on a Pern MUSH. These are the commands that will help you to survive in the IC (in character) world. This is how players and characters communicate.

Say

The 'say' command is the most basic, elementary way of getting your point across on a MUSH. It's a very simple command, and it's standardized across all MUSHes. Basically, all you do is prepend your character's statement -- and it has to be a comment your character is saying, not another pose or a thought or anything else -- with a double quote ("). Note that you don't end with another " mark -- the game will automatically put it in for you.

What you type:

"I'm very pleased to meet you.

What everyone sees:

Character says, "I'm very pleased to meet you."

Note that the overuse of this command can be very annoying. To start all your poses with "So and so says.." gets very boring, very fast. So it's there and it's usable but you'll want to mix it up a bit to inject some variety into your poses.

Pose

Posing is the mainstay of RP. The 'pose' command is the one that gets used the most often. It will always begin with your name, but it allows you to begin with an action rather than with a verbal comment. Through this you can pose not saying anything at all if that's what you want to do. Again, it's very simple. Assume the first word will be your character's name -- the game will put it in for you. Then use a colon (:) and start your pose.

What you type:

:settles into a chair, pulling her juice glass close. "Actually, I've been at the Weyr for a while now. Are you new?"

What everyone sees:

Character settles into a chair, pulling her juice glass close. "Actually, I've been at the Weyr for a while now. Are you new?"

Possessive Pose

This is a variant on 'pose'. This is how you put commas right after your name in a pose, or pose using a possessive. Just use a semicolon (;) instead of a colon.

What you type:

;'s eyes widen appreciatively at that tidbit of information. "Ista, really?"

What everyone sees:

Character's eyes widen appreciatively at that tidbit of information. "Ista, really?"

Note that this is different on some MOOs. There the possessive code is a double colon (::). Some people flip flop between MUSH and MOO a lot, so it's easy to get messed up. Don't worry, though; everyone will forgive you.

Emit

This is how you start a pose with a word other than your own name. You simply type '@emit' and then your pose exactly as you want it to appear on the screen.

What you type:

@emit Settling further back in her chair, Character sips at her juice before answering. "Southern is my home now."

What everyone sees:

Settling further back in her chair, Character sips at her juice before answering. "Southern is my home now."

Don't forget to put your name in the pose if you use @emit. That way we know who you are when you talk. This is also how you can emit an NPC to the room at large without including your name in the pose. Don't begin one of your own poses with someone else's name, that gets really confusing really fast. \\ is a shortcut for @emit.

What you type:

\\Settling further back in her chair, Character sips at her juice before answering. "Southern is my home now."

What everyone sees:

Settling further back in her chair, Character sips at her juice before answering. "Southern is my home now."

Page

Not technically an RP command but a vital part of MUSH(message)'. The 'pose' command works here, just use the colon after the = sign. If you don't, then it will treat it as a 'say' command. This is where aliases come in handy. This is how to talk privately with one or more people without them being in the same room, or during RP. The syntax is 'page (person)=(message)', or just 'p (person)=message -- they're there so people can page you fast, without typing out your full name. We'll use an example of an alias here.

What you type:

p fri=Good afternoon, how are you?

What you see:

You paged Friend with: 'Good afternoon, how are you?'

What Friend (Fri) sees:

Friend pages: Good afternoon, how are you?

The page prefixes depend on if it's a posed comment or not. There are two variants. 'From afar' and 'long distance' that don't directly say it's a page.

On a MUSH, this command works only for paging one person. If you want to page more than that, you use what's called multipage. The syntax is identical to the page command, except you use 'mp' instead of just 'p'. In other words: 'mp (name) (name) (name)=(message)'. This will work for as many people as you like.

What you type:

mp fri per=:grins. You all are silly.

What you see:

Long distance to Friend and Person: Character grins. You all are silly.

What Friend and Person see:

From afar to Friend and Person: Character grins. You all are silly.

A variant on this is the multipage/room syntax. This is how you can page everyone in your location without typing all their names. Just type 'mp/room (message)'. Note that there's no = sign involved.

Channel Chatting

Channels, or 'knots', are the way that the members of the game communicate with each other OOCly. There's always one knot per area, and sometimes there are other knots you might be on, such as organizations. You'll be added to knots by your area admins as you join the various areas. You'll automatically start hearing the chatter. To talk, use an = sign, the knot's alias, and then your comment. Syntax: '=(alias) (comment)'

What you type:

=sbw :waves. Hi there!

What Southern Barrier Weyr sees:

<Southern Barrier Weyr> Character waves. Hi there!

There is a three-letter alias for each knot. Some aliases for SouCon MUSH:

IEW = Ierne Weyr
ICA = Ierne Coverage Area
SEM = Seminole Hold
SOW = Southern Weyr
SOA = Southern Coverage Area
UCH = Unified Crafthall

Mailing

A global mail system, +mail, allows you to send and receive messages, and provides various useful utilities for writing, reading, and managing those messages. For full details of the +mail system, look at +help mail online.

How to send a message:

+mail <Character Name> =<Subject of Mail>
- <Content of Message>
- <Continued content of Message, if necessary>
--

If you see the message 'You have unread mail', then do this:

+read un
